Primary Eye Care Service
PURPOSE. To assess usage of eye care services in a rural community of southern India aged between 40 and 70 years old. The study was done to assess the effectiveness of eye care programs initiated by eye care service organizations offering quality vision care and at the same time, save a significant amount of budget in the process. These rural communities have a high percentage of people suffering from age related eye problems like glaucoma and macular degeneration. An eye care service in these communities could prove to be a significant difference in the lives of such people. It could also help them lead a healthy and active life. Study finds that most people in this community do not use eye care services but they still suffer from various eye diseases. They mostly complain about their eyesight being affected adversely and optometrist plays a key role in improving eye health and vision condition. According to a recent research conducted, these people may need to undergo eye exams for prescribed lenses or contact lenses. The majority of the community uses conventional lenses. However, research has found that traditional contact lenses are affecting vision health negatively. It has been found that more people in this community are using multifocal glasses, contact lenses and daily wear contacts. This is because daily contact lenses may affect eye health negatively and people do not wish to waste their money on such products. Therefore, it is recommendable to introduce eye exams in these communities to know their eye health. A typical eye care clinic in the community carries a comprehensive range of eye care equipment. Some of the items included are eyelid trays, eyelid cleaners, handpieces, refractive therapy tools, and special lenses. This equipment helps to reduce the occurrence of dry eye syndrome and also treats acute dry eye conditions effectively. Eye care optometrists also provide eye exams to the community to monitor the eye health of their patients. In this process, they examine the basic health condition of the patient and then provide recommendations as per individual requirements. In addition to this, the optometrist helps the patients to select suitable eye glasses, contact lenses or daily wear corrective lenses according to their vision needs. In some cases, if the patient requires glasses to treat a specific health condition, the optometrist makes customized prescription glasses. If required, he can also help the patient to purchase sunglasses, contact lens case, and hair ties and scarves. Many optometrists provide primary eye care service to the community through their websites. For this purpose, they carry comprehensive information regarding various eye care products. In addition, these online resources provide contact lens care tips and advice as well. This information can be of great use to those who require contact lens care. Most users are happy with the optometry services that are offered by the optometrists and this has ensured that many people opt for this method to improve their eye health.

Sixty-two persons participated in this study. All these subjects were patients from a common community hospital in Srinagar. The mean age was 50. Most of the people were unemployed. Most of them were not using any other eye care service at the time of admission. The mean income of the community was about ` Rs. 7000 per annum. The most striking result was that despite being such poor class of people the mean income earned by them was nearly equal to the national average. The reason for their good economic status was that almost all of them had some form of private eye care facility at their home or near their work place. Almost all these facilities have a direct connection with a well established private eye hospital. These hospitals are well equipped for the treatment of glaucoma. However, most of these patients did not receive any treatment due to lack of awareness in rural area. There was little or no eye care service available from this homepage to them. They were not aware of glaucoma and its complications. Even though most of them used eye injectors occasionally, they could not afford the regular treatment given to them by eye care centers. As a result, most of them lived a long and unhappy life. About twenty percent of these people died due to complications of glaucoma. Some of them developed eye conditions after using eye injectors on a daily basis. These individuals had to wait for two to three years for eye specialists to take up their case. Another factor responsible for delay in treatment is that eye care centers had no idea about the preventive measures which can be adopted immediately in case of any emergency. However, the information regarding these measures was not passed on to these centers at http://mycorneacare.com/. It is the duty of the local government to provide suitable eye care service to the poor people. It has been noticed that most of the organizations which were providing eye care facilities before had a political association. They were controlled by political agents. With the passage of time, some of these centers too have come under the control of local politicians.
